FAQ: How do I move my collection to a new folder, hard drive or NAS, Will I lose my edits?

If you're going to move all or part of your music library, please follow the strategy below to ensure Roon can accurately track your files to their new location.

If you are adding new files that Roon has never seen, then you can skip this whole thing, as Roon will just find your new files automatically.

Preparation

1. Confirm you're running the latest version of Roon. You can check this by clicking About on the Settings page
   
2. Make sure you have a recent backup > Instructions on how to conduct a backup are here.
   
3. Confirm that current file imports have completed 
   
1. You must wait until existing imports are completed, or you will surely have data loss. You can monitor this process by clicking the spinner in the top-right of Roon. If there is no spinner, all imports have completed.

Steps

If you are moving files between locations, drives, or machines, then it is best to avoid letting Roon see 2 copies of the same file at the same time:

1. Be sure you have a current backup of your database before proceeding
   
2. In Roon's Settings > Storage, remove all old storage folders that contain the files that are being relocated.
   
3. For performance reasons, if you are adding a large amount of music (1000's of tracks), quit Roon (or stop RoonServer on Nucleus). The best experience will come from letting Roon look at the folders when the files have settled.
   
4. Move/Copy the files to the new location
   
5. If you stopped Roon in Step 3, start it again.
   
6. In Roon's Settings > Storage, add the new watched folder location.
