FAQ: How Do I Setup Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

What is Multi-factor Authentication?

Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is an authentication method that requires two or more verification factors in order to login to your Roon account. Aside from the usual password login, you have the option to setup a token authentication step: a tool used to generate a one-time passcode (OTP) sent to a mobile device to prove your identity during the login process.

MFA adds an extra layer of protection beyond your password. Even if someone steals or correctly guesses your password, they can’t access your account (or your music) without the second factor. This guide will walk you through the essentials for setting up MFA on your Roon account.

How to Setup MFA

Upon logging into your Roon account page, you'll see your Subscription, Payment Method and Account Information. Directly under Account Information, you should see the option to enable/disable Multi-factor authentication:

When selecting to change MFA on your account, you will be prompted with next steps, as well as a QR code:

1. Please install an authenticator app to your mobile device, such as Authy, Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator.
2. Open the authenticator app on your mobile device and scan the QR code shown on your account page.
3. Once you've scanned the QR code, Roon will be added to your authenticator app and a passcode will be generated.
4. Enter the passcode from your authenticator app into Roon and click Submit.

And that's it! You now have MFA setup on your Roon account. Moving forward, when logging into Roon you will asked to enter a passcode from your authenticator app in order to complete the login process.

Info
If you ever need to disable MFA, you can do so directly from your Roon account page. Please note that removing MFA from your account will require a passcode from your authenticator app.
Alert
If, for any reason, you no longer have access to the MFA application used for your Roon account, please, reach out to our Accounts & Billing team (I have a billing or account question -> MFA). They will be able to assist in disabling MFA and get you back to the music!
