Tailscale Setup Instructions: NAS RoonServer

This document outlines how to install Tailscale on a NAS-based Roon Server (Synology, QNAP, Unraid, TrueNAS, or ASUSTOR) and configure it for accessing ARC on a phone outside your home network.

STEP ONE: Install Tailscale on your NAS

If you’re new to Tailscale, you’ll first need to create a free Tailscale account and download the app to your NAS.

QNAP: Follow the instructions on Tailscale’s website to download and install Tailscale from the QNAP App Center.

Synology: Follow the instructions on Tailscale’s website to download and install Tailscale from the Synology Package Center.

Unraid: Follow the instructions on Tailscale’s website to download and install Tailscale from the Unraid Apps menu.

TrueNAS SCALE Follow the instructions on Tailscale’s website to download and install Tailscale from the Apps tab.

ASUSTOR Tailscale is natively available in the ASUSTOR App Central. To install it:

  1. Log in to your ASUSTOR ADM web interface.

  2. Open App Central.

  3. Search for Tailscale and click Install.

  4. Once installed, open the Tailscale app from the ADM desktop and log in with your Tailscale account to connect your NAS to your Tailscale network by logging in to the same Tailscale account.

STEP TWO: Install Tailscale on iOS/Android

On your phone, download the Tailscale app, install it, and log in to the same account you used for your NAS.

STEP THREE: Configure and Test Tailscale

  1. Restart Roon Server on your NAS and the ARC app on your phone.

  2. Turn off WiFi on your phone, leaving only the cellular data connection active.

  3. Open the settings page in ARC and look for “Connected” to see if ARC is working.

If ARC is not connected, you need to force Roon to disable standard port forwarding:

  1. Open the Roon Remote app (on your computer or tablet).

  2. Go to Settings → Roon ARC.

  3. Enter 0 in the box for “Port”.

  4. If successfully disabled, you should see a “Not Ready” status in this menu. This is normal—it forces ARC to rely entirely on the Tailscale connection.

Note: Some networks have port ranges reserved. If 0 If another number is not accepted as input in the “Port” box, try a few different numbers until the “Not Ready” status displays.

Alert

Initial Sync Recommendation: If you haven’t performed your initial library sync with ARC, we recommend syncing for the first time using a local WiFi connection. Once the initial sync is complete, turn on cellular data only (disable WiFi) and test the Tailscale connection.

STEP FOUR: Further Resources

If you’re still having difficulty using ARC with Tailscale, please post on the Roon Community in the #tinkering category, where users are accumulating Tailscale/ARC expertise.

We also recommend engaging Tailscale support directly — they offer robust and responsive support and are better equipped to troubleshoot within the Tailscale app itself than Roon support. Please see their Support page here to reach their team.
