Overview
Smart App Control is a security feature enabled by default on new, off-the-shelf Windows 11 installs. When active, it can prevent RoonServer from accessing the network, causing connectivity issues with your Roon Remotes and Zones.
This issue will mostly affect newly-purchased computers. Smart App is disabled by default on any Windows 11 system that was updated from a previous Windows version. It does not affect Windows 10, and it also does not affect Windows 11 systems that were upgraded from Windows 10.
What is Smart App Control?
Smart App Control is a Windows 11 security feature designed to block applications that Microsoft considers untrusted or potentially unsafe. When enabled, it can silently restrict background services—including legitimate applications—from making outbound network connections.
Because Roon relies on background services and network communication, it may be affected when Smart App Control is enabled.
Symptoms You May See
Roon or RoonServer cannot connect to the internet
Roon Remotes can't find RoonServer
No network or local Zones are visible in Settings -> Audio
Login or authorization failures
Roon ARC can't connect to Roon
Network-related errors without firewall or antivirus warnings
How to Check and Disable Smart App Control
Open Windows Security
Go to App & browser control
Select Smart App Control
Set Smart App Control to Off
Restart your computer
Important: Once Smart App Control is turned off, Windows does not allow it to be re-enabled without reinstalling Windows. This is expected Windows behavior.
After Disabling
After disabling Smart App Control and rebooting, Roon should be able to access the internet normally. No additional firewall or antivirus configuration is usually required. Standard protections (Windows Defender, firewall, antivirus) remain active.
FAQ: Do I need to reinstall Windows?
Q: Does leaving Smart App Control off reduce security?
A: No. Standard Windows security features, including Windows Defender and the firewall, remain active. Roon will work normally with these protections in place.
Q: Will I need to reinstall Windows to fix this issue?
A: No. Disabling Smart App Control and restarting your PC is sufficient to restore Roon’s internet access.
Q: When would a reinstall be required?
A: Only if you want to re-enable Smart App Control after turning it off. Microsoft intentionally makes this a one-way change, so a reinstall is the only way to turn it back on.
