Updating

Roon is always improving, so it's important to keep all your devices up to date. Updating gives you the latest features and improvements, whether you're running Roon, Roon Server, or the Roon app on a phone or tablet. Updates are always free for subscribers, and it's easy to update every device on your network.

Updating Roon & Roon Server

You can update Roon and Roon Server from any device connected to Roon.

  1. Go to Settings > About.
  2. Available updates are listed under the device they're for. Click the update to install it.
  3. If the update has already been downloaded, you're prompted to relaunch.

If a device is already up to date, it shows "You have the latest version installed." When an update is available, Roon may also show an Update available notification. Click Update All to update every device at once.

Updating the Roon app on mobile

On phones and tablets, you update the Roon app like any other app. Please head to the App Store or Google Play Store to update to the latest version. We recommend turning on automatic updates for Roon, so you're always on the latest version.

The Roon app update is released at the same time as the Roon software update. Availability in the app stores depends on your region, though, so some regions may see a short delay.

We strongly recommend updating the Roon app on your iOS and Android devices before you accept the update on your Roon Server.

Updating Nucleus Firmware

If your Roon Server runs on a Nucleus, please keep its firmware up to date. Update it when you first set up your Nucleus, before you set up your audio devices, remotes, or storage. Then update it as new releases become available.

Update Nucleus Firmware from the Web Administration Interface

  1. In Roon, go to Settings > Setup.
  2. Next to Find Roon OS, click Find. A window appears listing all RoonOS devices on your network.
  3. Find your Nucleus and click its IP address. This opens the Nucleus Web Administration Interface.
  4. Update or reinstall the firmware:
    • Nucleus One and Nucleus Titan (RoonOS 3.0): on the Overview tab, find the Operating System row. If an update is available, click Update. You can also click Reinstall to reinstall the latest version.
    • Nucleus and Nucleus+: click Reinstall under Operating System.

The latest available firmware installs on your Nucleus. For more details, please see How to Update Nucleus Firmware and Roon Server Software.

Updating RoonOS Firmware on ROCK

If your Roon Server runs on ROCK, please keep RoonOS up to date. Update it when you first set up your ROCK, then as new releases become available.

  1. In Roon, go to Settings > Setup.
  2. Next to Find Roon OS, click Find. A window appears listing all RoonOS devices on your network.
  3. Find your ROCK and click its IP address. This opens the RoonOS Web Administration Interface.
  4. Update or reinstall RoonOS:
    • ROCK on RoonOS 3.0 (UEFI mode): on the Overview tab, find the Operating System row. If an update is available, click Update. You can also click Reinstall to reinstall the latest version.
    • ROCK in legacy BIOS mode: click Reinstall under Operating System.

RoonOS installs on your ROCK at the latest available version. Updating or reinstalling doesn't affect your settings or your Roon database.

On RoonOS 3.0, the Operating System row also shows your Update track: production for regular releases, or earlyaccess if you've joined the Early Access program. To switch tracks, please see the Roon Early Access Program.

Update Settings

Roon offers three options for handling updates, and you can set them for each device. To choose one, go to Settings > About, click the gear icon on a device's card, and select an option. The current setting is highlighted.

These options don't appear on mobile remotes.

  • Automatically install all updates (Recommended): Roon downloads every update as it becomes available. This is the best way to stay on the latest version and get new improvements first. Once an update installs, you're prompted to relaunch the app.
  • Automatically install bugfix and other minor updates: Roon installs minor maintenance releases automatically, and asks before any major update downloads. Major updates generally include new features or bigger changes.
  • Ask before downloading any updates: Roon doesn't download updates automatically. When an update is available, a notification lets you choose whether to install it.

Downgrading

Downgrading Roon isn't supported. It can cause database, remote, and cloud compatibility issues.
